that were that story of El
and here we will have more...

EVENTUALLY I found out this guy
was part of this band the MENTORS
even though I knew his shtick
I had no idea what music he did.
AND I SAY DID,
because here at the Cathay de Grande*
I see my friend putting on a BLACK HOOD
and climbing behind a drumset frocked
with pictures of obese strippers.
and his cohorts also had back hoods,
one being introduced as SICKY WIFEBEATER

What music could come from this,
after laughing till I plotzed,
did I figure the whole thing out...

Some women loved Eldon,
some thought he was hilarious, AND
SOME WOMEN DESPISED EL DUCE.
I even read messages now after
his death with hateful remarks...

It is a calm night in the Cathay bar
and in comes El Duce being led
by some lady friend.
Girls ply themselves on Eldon.

YET, maybe just maybe some of
HIS LYRICS would create some concern
like "MY WOMAN FROM SODOM...",
or him going around saying loudly
[ oops- I'm sorry can't write that one...]
"..I'll meet you in an alley..."
just maybe some women may
express concern or displeasure.

So THIS was the MENTORS
loud playing comedy sicko hooded
masters of metal-punk.
El Duce 'singing' and playing drums
with ERIC sicky wifebeater
as his main fantastic guitarist

I taped them at the Cathay and Fenders
much later I talked with him at the
king king he wanted to do mondo tv
or something, then El Duce moved
out with the band to the desert,
were screwed my metalblade records,
and I did not see him ever again
EXCEPT in my fond memories .

el duce, the GUY:
... if Punk Rock Saved My Life
then El Duce franchised it...

I wrote about the
punk tv show with El Duce,
yet that was way after the first time
I saw ELdon.There was a fast playing,
hard driving, punk band playing
take your pick BYO, DI ...
it doesn't matter because here
was some guy grabbing the mike
from the singer. He was large in stature,
well fat and baldheaded
wearing a wife beater t-shirt
and real baggy shorts.
All sort of dirty.

It was weird nobody was stopping him.
He was raising his arms
and yelling in a deep gravelly voice:
MEN ARE SUPERIOR
he repeated and muttered some
dialog, seemingly funny,degrading women
WAIT TIL I GET YOUR GIRLFRIEND

I saw this many times,Cathay de Grande,
Olympic, Fenders
This guy stopping the group
and going on some diatribe.
Yet, the bands let him go on
for a while before stopping him.

Weird just some drunk, until I kept
seeing him off stage at the Cathay.
Oh, the SAME EL DUCE OFFSTAGE
and by the way 98% of his life,
El goes around and when ready,
drunker, he did his thing just louder.

The Cathay had a habit of ,
well if you stayed long enough,
you stayed, and drank, all night long.
And by the time the sun comes up
and you give Eldon a ride home
a FEW TIMES, I think you get
to really know the man.

El Duce was always a great person to me.
Like an Uncle. Uncle Duch.
His apartment was a seedy
beer cans on the moon.
And we talked about many things
during that 2% time he was not drunk.

One day I was in my truck and parked,
near the porno Ivar Theater where
El Duce was the 'host' to all the girlies.
Bright day and these two girls screaming
asking to get in my truck because
THIS GUY is accosting them,
to which El jumps in the bed of my
pickup as I drive away
just imagine...so funny.

Frank Gets Ill...

English Frank Gets Ill...

...a few years ago...a few years ago
Robin called Kiki to tell her
that English Frank was very ill.
Robin had been with Frank
a long time since his divorce.

Frank had cancer, was looking for
the best cures. Now FRANK
NEEDED THE BENEFIT.,
he always hepled others
now his turn...

We met at his favorite place,
the Cat and the Fiddle
with Kim the owner
Keith Morris and others
I'm sorry I do not remember
we met a few times while
Frank was in hospital care or
at a resthome. Kiki and I
visited him several times.

Frank knew he was very ill
and asked to make a small video
for his daughter in England.
We did this, it was hard Frank was weak.

Well, the benefit turned out to be
a memorial.
Robin called Kiki first
who tearfully called me.
Kiki went to the service,
where Frank's turbulent life
continued as a guy with a camera tried
to film Frank's body, he was beat up.

The funeral was was very solemn though,
with a large wreath of flowers
from Lemmy of MOTOTRHEAD,
a long time friend of Frank's.
BY THE WAY
this was the first time in many years
that these band members
had been together,
but FOR FRANK.

We all had the memorial at
John Pochna's zero-one gallery
Keith Morris was there
performing with the bands
the Flesh Eaters, the Gears,
Thelonius Monster Bob Forrest
and Mike Martt too.
It was a sad 1998.

Frank we love you, always.

Sometimes Frank was a little
to a lot overboard drinking wise
that never stopped him
from his accomplishments

After GAZZARI'S was torn down
FRANK was a carpenter for the
Billboard, now Key Club and built
its revolving stage

our imported caretaker...

While it is very hard to talk about
Frank even years after his passing,
doing so bring fond memories of
the friendship Frank
GAVE TO THE ENTIRE scene

He gave so many BENEFITS
for people in the SCENE.
Always star studded
features to help someone,
and Frank only wanted
a six pack in return.

Of course I had known Frank a long time,
and I wanted to tape at the Variety Arts Center
THE DEAD BOYS, so I waited by the
dressing rooms to ask permission.
The dressing room door opens and there is
Frank who sees me and motions like an
old time hand movie camera and motioned
me inside to meet Stiv Bators, and the ok to tape.
Thank You once again Frank.
Stiv Bators called me from New York
while watching the copy of the gig
which he liked... he asking me if I liked the
DEAD BOYS or LORDS of the NEW CHURCH.
Great guy. Oh, I had taped the LORDS
at a benefit before by Frank at the Music Machine

English Frank hung out a lot at
The Cat and the Fiddle on Sunset
he partied with friends there
he got married there
then
we made plans for his benefit
when he was sick there
and later plans, there too...

Benefit after benefit to help friends...

the scenes of the Minutemen,
I shot, at the Music Machine
are from a benefit Frank put
on for Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks

WE were interviewing Gary Goldenvoice
at office in the Olympic Auditorium
and STEVO was there
and KIKI * asked him a question? :

What is your opinion of the so-called
" BIG SHOWS " ruining the scene for small bands?
[stevo]
No taking away from the smaller bands, not at all,
I think it's making it far more acceptable.
In fact, we're getting Punks out
of the trashcans and into the streets.
It's like an epic event,
like Ben Hur when we play someplace.

At JOHN POCNA'S FAMOUS
ZERO-ONE on VINE ST.,
we interviewed STEVO again,
just after being told he could
not be a Vandal anymore
He showed us his LEGAL NOTICE
that he had no rights anymore
It was SAD but STEVO himself made
tragic comedy out of it...

...much later he called me from Little River
up by Mendecino were he lived
until moving to the Island of Maui.
He wanted those tape copies of his Roxy
performance and Kiki's interviews *
at the Olympic and Zer0-one

I sent them to him...
I hope he enjoyed
the films as much as
we all enjoyed him

we will all miss this
great artist and friend

wanted to do
a TV SHOW

mimicking the Orange County
TV Conservative with a wig
"Wally George Show" where he
belittled guests on his hot seat.

SO WE ALL GOT IT TOGETHER
Candy was the producer
and I directed and videotaped *
with an audience of Cathay regulars.

We did the shows on Tuesday nights
for about 2 months upstairs,
the downstairs' room was now closed

We had a small stage and Eldon made a sign
with the name of his creation

the "COLD SEAT" *
[ SEE VIDEOSTREAM OF A CLIP of El Duce's
COLD SEAT at the cATHAY DE gRANDE ]

No MENTORS music just El Duce
guests including Tequila Mockingbird,
various punk rockers and hangeroners

There were NAZI's
[ real, at least they said they were ]
Bikers rolling their HARLEY'S
right into the club

Gary Scary came in for
a rousing narrative with "El".
Gary helped El Duce with some
of his record promotion 'films'
like GET UP AND DIE [ click listen ]

We got our host so messed up
one time, he was passing out
and Candy handcuffed him
in one of the booths before the show
WE ALL HAD FUN
this was our SCENE

EL DUCE RELISHED
THE HOSTING OF HIS SHOW
he had a script of 'current events'
and gave his monologe in true
El Duce/MENTORS' fashion

THE PLACE FOR HANGING OUT
Great owners and workers
with the over 21 punk crowd.

It seems the ol' CRUSTYS
are playing there too
recently went to tape
newly reformed NIP DRIVERS
ANOTHER TIME we ALSO
taped FOR eNTROPY

most of the time many new punk bands play
showing all the vigor and thrash
of bands 20 years ago
one such band is the
SMUT PEDDLERS
these guys are a great group
who are the o.g.'s for
punk rock these days

now here is a true
AMERICAN PUNK BAND
WITH AN AVID FOLLOWING

when they were traveling a while back
in Chico, Ca. I had my best friend
Candy who lives up there
tape the band at a local bar.
The band loved it.

Favorite haunt out of the
Hollywood and L.A. SCENE *
The story is John Fender the
Guitar Guy
owned this hall, it must be true
since its logo is the same FENDER'S logo.

Cavernous ballroom
small band dressing room
right off the stage
and a nice wide stage yet not so deep.
low ceiling with large wood rafters
Ample areas to sit on floor, stand or slam.

Host to a variety of functions I'm sure
but as far as we were concerned,
meeting outside on a brisk oceanside night,
we were here for going inside
to a bevy of punk music

I saw D.I. so many times there...
one time Casey was, well he WAS THERE
but there was a substitution
with other band members singing
because he was there,
but not at the right time
the show must go on...

We did a great interview
with British TOY DOLLS
after the gig on stage
we also interviewed
Canadian VOIVOD right
in the dressing before they played

Many great nights-

I never had the hot dog 'burrito' + everything
at that stand down from where the FREE PRESS
was published in even another Scene, on FAIRFAX

the Okie Dog L.A. punk eatery, they say
mentioned by all the ol' punk "CRUSTYS"
and in photographs 'of the SCENE' all the time

throughout eastern L.A.
WHAT ON eARTH does THIS

as I was

are rolled up as I drive away to the gig,

only eat-in restaurants if that,
and
after all the great punk music and fun
at FENDER'S...
where to eat NOW?
I NEEDED FOOD !!!

Here I am driving the 710 fwy probably after 3am,
nothing open at home, nothing noticable off the freeway
BUT I'M STARVED- WHAT CAN I DO ?
too far away from CANTER'S DELI in Hollywood
they're open 24/7 oh a fresh tuna salad on corn rye
coleslaw dill pickle *
and dr brown's soda
NO TOO FAR - TOO TIRED

He started in Santa Barbara and quickly
moved down south and put on big and
small venue punk concerts for many years
in the Los Angeles Orange County areas

I have been videotaping
since the 70's, yet in the early 80's
I asked if I could Videotape T.S.O.L.
at the Cathay de Grande in Hollywood, Ca.
The manager said come to the OLYMPIC
Auditorium in DownTown L.A.
and video them ON STAGE!

and THIS IS WHEN I MET GARY
I think I met TOMMY first who worked
with Gary for years and he introduced
me to GARY GOLDENVOICE

one great time
we interviewed Gary in the Olympic Aud office
with Stevo of the Vandals Stevo funny as ever
while Gary told how he puts on concerts all over
in large and small venues and many underage concerts too.
Olympic, Palladium, Stardust Ballroom
Berwin, Lingere, Fenders in Long Beach, Santa Monica Civic...
and lots of clubs and later some larger venues as time went by.

THOSE BANDS THAT GARY SHOWED US
all American punk bands
many English punk bands and others
played the large Olympic Aud
SCREAM, DOA, GBH, EXPLOITED *
CONFLICT, SubHumans *
there were special nites like
British bands or International
theme or BYO would put on a
concert of groups with
Youth Brigade headlining

and Gary was always with everyone,
not hiding out anywhere,
he was on stage and among all
he would let punkers help
and be bouncers, sell t-shirts
let any young band have a chance
to express there musical angst.

Gary always introduced me
to bands and he let me video
as much as I wanted -
with permission of the bands

one time though we came late and AFTER taping
CONFLICT from the UK, backstage
we were met with a very mad lead singer
who wanted to know who we were
GARY SAVED US
I later went to where
the band was staying at ETCH's HOUSE
he also vouched for me and I taped the band again

BUT IT WAS GARY who praised us,
wined and dined us treated us
like royality what for?
we were only video guys...

LASTLY...
Skrawney was there, Perry was there
and a host of ol' punk bands to give
Gary GoldenVoice
his retirement Palladium concert
at the end of his fantastic career.
